(Is Biotin for growing hair???  Biotin Rich Foods??)

Biotin (C10H16N2O3S) is a water-soluble vitamin that's a part of the vitamin B family. It's also known as vitamin H or B7, that helps the body metabolize fats, carbohydrates, and protein. Your body needs biotin to help convert certain nutrients into energy. It also plays an important role in the health of your hair, skin, and nails. Biotin is necessary for formation of fatty acids and glucose, which are used as fuels by the body. As it is water-soluble, our body doesn’t store biotin it is flushed out by our body through the process of urination.

What Biotin or Biotin Rich Foods Does to our body?-

Biotin is one of the B complex vitamins that help the body convert food into energy. The word “biotin” comes from the ancient Greek word “biotos,” which means “life” or “sustenance.” B vitamins, and specifically biotin, help keep your skin, hair, eyes, liver, and nervous system healthy. Biotin helps in the breakdown of Food (Carbohydrate) into glucose and provides us energy for our day-to-day work. Biotin assists in growth of hair, skin and nails. Here you have to understand that biotin is not a primary micronutrient for your hair but it helps in re-growth of hair and makes your hair thick.

Biotin Deficiency and its side effects?-

A biotin deficiency isn’t as common as other deficiencies because only one out of ten people may be Biotin deficient mainly due to allergy from seafood, non-Vegetarian food, nuts or other milk/dairy products. If your doctor suspects you’re not getting enough B-7(Biotin), a blood test can measure the level in your blood. Your doctor may order additional blood and lab tests to check other levels. They can use these numbers to either confirm or rule out a biotin deficiency. Still, a biotin deficiency can occur. If it does, these symptoms may develop:

  • Skin Rashes, especially on the face
  • Acne
  • Pimples
  • Frequent Urination
  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
  • Dry skin

Sources of Biotin (Biotin Rich Foods)?-

The recommended doses of biotin as per WHO are different for different age groups, for adult it is 300 mcg per day. There are many sources of biotin, it is found in Meat, Egg White and Walnut. So many of us, almost everyone consumes these things on regular basis so the chance of being Biotin deficient is very less, still if anyone thinks that he/she may have the biotin deficiency in the body he/she can opt for a lab test. A lab report will show you the exact figures.

Note--  Excess production of Di-Hydro-testosterone (DHT) (C19H30O2) by your body can also lead to hair fall.

Now if you find that you are biotin deficient after a lab test, then I recommend you to start eating things mentioned above or you can add a supplement of biotin in your diet. Here you have to keep in mind one thing that the recommended value of biotin by WHO are 300 mcg and for starters, many biotin supplements contain way more biotin than the generally accepted amount you need per day, with many supplements containing anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 micrograms of biotin per pill which is nearly 30 times more than the recommended doses of biotin and probably you must be taking a little amount of Biotin through food also. However, the NIH (National Institute for Health, USA) even says that there's no evidence that biotin is toxic at high levels, as it is water-soluble, our body doesn’t store biotin it is flushed out by our body through the process of urination.

Here you have to note one thing that only biotin is not a vital micro nutrient for your hair growth, you also need other macros and micros like Omega-3, Amino Acids etc. You can buy Biotin supplement from Amazon here -
